Bad Day for My Childhood

Being that I was in middle school during the late 80s and early 90s, I was just getting into my musical experimentation. I was listening to a little bit of everything, trying to find out what I liked. Also I was a white kid growing up in the suburbs. So obviously like most white kids in the burbs at the time I was listening to a lot of Rap. ALSO being from not exactly a booming metropolis with lots of cool radio stations, my selection of rap was pretty much limited to what I heard on 98PXY (pop music) and MTV. Granted I did have my own inside connections and was also listening to a lot of lesser known, or totally underground stuff, but that is besides the point. So one of the thing that pretty much summed up 5th grade for he was Kris Kross.

I was not really all that shocked this morning to check the news and see that Chris Kelly (Daddy Mac) had dropped dead of a drug over dose. I mean, what the fuck has he done in the last 20 years? Last thing I remember seeing him do was this lame as So So Deaf 20th anniversary special with Da Brat (yeah she is still alive).

What did shock me however what that he OD’s on Coke and Heroin. Coke, ok I can see that (would have suspected crack). But the heroin threw me for a loop. I didn’t even know black people still did heroin. I thought that went out of style with them with Miles Davis.

Lesson learned.

And as far as my musical tastes went, they went to extremes. One of the other bands I listened to in my Youth was Slayer. So I was pretty sad this morning to read that Jeff Hanneman had died as well. He died of liver failure. Nothing about that shocked me.
